Looking for the perfect Mother’s Day outing in Lubbock? We’ve got an idea.
Inside the gentle hum of Clay Café, creativity takes shape in handprints, brushstrokes and warm conversation. Tables are dotted with open paint palettes, pottery in progress, and cups of water clouded with glaze. Tiny fingers paint prized pieces they proudly picked out all on their own.
On any given day, families huddle over ceramic mugs, plates, and figurines — less focused on perfection and more on connection.
And as Mother’s Day approaches, the studio becomes more than just a place to paint — it becomes a place to pause and cherish loved ones.
While flowers and cards are nice, the ability to create something meaningful—either for your mom, with your mom, or as a family project — is priceless. At Clay Café, the keepsakes families make are more than gifts; they’re tangible reminders of time spent together, often crafted with love, laughter and maybe a few smudges of misplaced paint.
For co-owner Davis, the connection to the studio is deeply personal. His own childhood was shaped inside these walls, where his mother worked as an artist for years. Now, the two of them co-own the space and continue its legacy together.
“I grew up here,” he said, recalling the memories and inspiration his mother passed down—lessons that ultimately led him to become an artist himself.
That sense of generational care now defines the space. Some families have been coming to Clay Café for decades, passing down the tradition from parent to child — and then from child to parent. It’s a full-circle experience Davis finds especially rewarding.
“It’s really special to see the same families return year after year,” he said. “We see people who came here as kids now bringing their own children.”
On the surface, the process is simple: pick a pottery piece, choose your paints, and start creating. There’s no time limit, no fee for extra space—you can spend minutes or come back over several weeks.
Regardless of how long it takes, the results are often deeply meaningful. Many families come to make keepsakes that capture a moment in time — like tiny baby footprints on a plate or a child’s messy handprint on a mug that mom will treasure forever.
The possibilities extend far beyond handprints. Some families get creative, incorporating designs like a child’s doodle or even a visual waveform of the child saying “I love you” — a contemporary take on a timeless sentiment. (Keep in mind, some designs may need to be printed and then drawn on before painting, so be sure to come prepared!)
While Mother’s Day is one of their busiest seasons, Davis emphasizes that honoring motherhood isn’t limited to a single day for those who can’t make the trip before Mother’s Day.
“You’re a mother all year,” he said. “So you can come anytime, and it will be just as special.”
Still, there’s something about this time of year that brings a special energy. Davis sees families working side by side, sharing laughs, helping each other pick colors, and talking through memories as they paint.
“You’re not just making a gift,” he said. “You’re making a moment.”
Finished pieces are typically ready for pickup about five to seven days after painting, so it’s important to plan accordingly. But plenty of customers also come on Mother’s Day itself, choosing to share the experience with their loved one rather than surprise them.
Whether the result is a masterpiece or a mess, Davis said the most cherished gifts are the ones filled with love — and sometimes a few fingerprints.
